This work aims the study of comics in the children s illustrated magazine O Tico-Tico (1905 - 1962). The highlight is the series Aventuras de Zé Macaco e Faustina, by the caricaturist Alfredo Storni, from 1909 to 1922. This object allows a privileged perspective to observe cultural mediation processes through the art of caricature in modern press set in a historical period when technical transformations and social upheavals accelerate. It is understood that meaning is a social construction, that the production of narratives conveyed in the media is a collective action, as conceptualized by Howard S. Becker, and that the consumption of such narratives has a mediating role in the processes of social representation, assimilation of changes, modern individual subjectivation and pedagogy of modern consumption and civilized behavior. For the study, all the stories in the clipping were read and fed to an analytical table, which allowed an interpretative analysis of the content based on the study of the professional field of caricaturists and their habitus. The work assumes that sets of comicstrips published in series constitute artistic works and that the generating principles of that works must be studied by mapping the successive positions occupied by the artists in the professional field from the beginning, and that his trajectory emulates his social trajectory. Since it is interesting to describe more deeply how the processes mentioned above take place, a selection of Storni s comicstrips is interpreted in detail on a theoretical basis regarding the relationship between people and objects, the civilizing process and the artistic tools of caricature and the grotesque. As a conclusion, it is set that, as a whole, Zé Macaco s stories weave na ambíguous account about brazilian Society, at the same time helping readers to become familiar with modern changes and mocking the superficial adoption of new fashions and habits.
